We were delighted at our recent Southbank market to amass over 850 signatures calling for more research into bee colony collapse. We need as many as we can muster, however, so do download a form or two, sign yourself and get friends and colleagues to do the same, then send the forms back to us. The potential catastrophe from the loss of bees as pollinators needs no further explanation, but for some reason research and funding for research seems way off the needed pace.
Here's the wording:
"Slow Food London, in common with Slow Food internationally, calls for the universal availability of food that is Good, Clean and Fair. Our concern in supporting the British Bee Keepers Association and British honey producers is to protect and promote the diverse and delicious native honey varieties produced sustainably, and with craft and care, by artisan beekeepers, who should receive a just reward for their dedication and skill. Moreover, while the contribution of bees as pollinators to UK agricultural output is estimated at £165 million per annum, their role in ensuring our food security is essential and invaluable.
I the undersigned call upon HM Government to expedite substantially increased funding for beekeeping research in the light of drastic and increasing threats to honey bee health."
