Exclusive Slow Food London opportunity to visit London’s only commercial cider maker using unwanted fruit.
According to John Burgess, ‘glider’ is Welsh rhyming slang for cider.
A wonderful visit to London Glider Cider in Woodford Green Monday evening March 25. Beginning in 2010, this innovative producer uses fruit from East London and suburban gardens that would otherwise go to waste. It is collected by London Glider for processing. Its operations conform exactly to Slow Food principles of local provenance and concern for the environment. It even ensures that residue pulp is given to a local farmer as animal feed.
Cider makers are husband and wife, Peter Newton and Rochelle Schwartz, and close friend, John Burgess. They’ll explain the making of the cider – pulping, fermenting, blending and maturing. As a special treat, the actual blending of differing raw ciders to produce the 2012 vintage dry or medium dry cider will be demonstrated. London Glider will for the first time be producing perry and its blending will also be shown.
London Glider cider has achieved acclaim in just 24 months. It’s won awards at festivals and is now stocked by renowned London pubs and restaurants such as Craft Beer Company in Clerkenwell – CAMRA’s City Pub of 2012!
