Week 6: (mostly) Slow in London by our community manager
Monday 29 July 2014
The usual breakfast: a boiled egg with or without E5 Bakehouse sourdough toast, and a cup of Colombian coffee with raw milk.
Lunch: a bought iced coffee and a home made tuna, cucumber and mayonnaise on sourdough sandwich.
Another fantastic warm night so I made pizza x3 with my home made spelt dough. Usual toppings: yellow courgette, tomato paste, mozzarella; and one with anchovies. Sriracha sauce of course.
The staple standby: Cornish clotted cream and strawberry ice cream. It was on special - a real special, not one of the supermarket made up specials - how do I know, cos I know the usual price - so I'd bought 2 for 1. I'm counting the pennies, because even though I'm working again, I started the day they run payroll. So for any non-UK readers, that means I don't get paid for another month!
Tuesday
The usual breakfast.
Lunch of leftovers: some Ottolenghi and a pizza.
Too hungry to cook something complicated so it was the toasted halloumi sandwich with fried egg, gherkin, home grown stairwell window box plum tomatoes, mayonnaise, Sriracha sauce.
I haven't eaten any fruit that wasn't in ice cream recently. My work route means I don't pass the local shops where I usually buy fruit and I'm yet to update my routine. I'm not doing too badly wih veg, but I need to get fruit back on track.
I can't stay away from this popping candy and jelly chocolate I discovered. This happened also when KitKat launched their peanut butter flavour. Think I ate one every night for an entire winter. Then I was over it.
Wednesday
The usual breakfast.
Lunch: a bought iced coffee and a home made tuna, cucumber, sweet corn and mayonnaise on sourdough sandwich.
I boiled some unpeeled purple potatoes for a simple potato salad. Peeling them? Don't make me laugh. I think the skin makes them tastier. And because the cupboard was a bit bare and I'd been hankering for a while and I wanted a bit more dinner and variety I boiled a couple of eggs and devilled them. It was the first time I'd devilled.
Pop pop popping candy and jelly chocolate.
Thursday
The usual breakfast.
Lunch: a bought iced coffee and a home made tuna, cucumber, sweet corn and mayonnaise on sourdough sandwich.
It can be tricky to feed yourself when you go to an event in the evening. So I bought 2 onigiris - the Japanese nori triangles - to tide me over. At the event they serve Hendrick's gin punch in delightful Hendrick's branded tea cups. A cheeky half after at a Camra pub - I ordered Funky Monkey just so I could say the name.
One of those Cornish pasties - vegetable.
At home more pop pop popping candy and jelly chocolate. And some Ben and Jerry's Karamel Sutra (yep, that was the one on special last supermarket visit). Lollies and stuff in ice cream, I'm a fan. I don't eat ice cream in winter, cos my homeland is Australia, and I used to think any day under 30ºC was not summer - not hot enough for me to eat it. Winter here - I'm drinking whiskey, not eating cold stuff! So I really enjoy ice cream in the summer.
Friday
The usual breakfast.
As a treat I bought lunch today and I tried Leon's fish finger roll. It was good, but would have been better if it had been made on the spot, rather than served on the spot.
A starter of Ottolenghi and later some Japanese style cold udon noodles with tamari, nori and sweet chillli sauce.
Pop pop popping candy and jelly chocolate.
Saturday
The usual breakfast.
Out and about I was tempted by deep fried cheese balls and pineapple salsa. It was really good. after all, deep fried cheese, what's not to like? Some local beers, tasty, crisp east London lager. Crisps.
Pop pop popping candy and jelly chocolate.
Sunday
A delicious iced coffee and the Brick Lane standard smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. There are 2 bagel shops and I was surprised to see the one furtherest from the corner was shut. Apparently it's been shut for a week. I am agnostic which one I frequented, I always choose the one with the shortest queue. I honestly can't tell any difference between the bagels of either shop.
My simple favourite: buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes, basil, balsamic, olive oil and seasoning.
Dinner at a local pop up featuring chicken. I'm always overly disappointed when the vegie burger is a boring standard Portobello mushroom. Sigh. They had corn on the menu, they could have made wonderful spicy corn patties for a vegie burger, not rocket science. I had coleslaw, crinkle cut fries and onion fries. I'm afraid the onion fries were a joke. Way, way, WAY too much batter. And a chocolate donut. Yum.
