Week 11: (mostly) Slow in London by our community manager
The week with American crack. So you don't have to, I've munched my way through some American Cheetos, other savouries and chocolates unavailable here.
The usual breakfast of a boiled egg with or without E5 Bakehouse sourdough toast, and a cup of Colombian coffee with raw milk.
More coffee. Some leftover home made quinoa, fetta, parsley and tomato salad.
The old standby staple when I am feeling super lazy, that is quick, tasty and pretty nutritious: the toasted sandwich with fried halloumi, egg, gherkin, tomatoes, mayonnaise, Sriracha sauce.
Later I had a chocolate bar and later still some grapes with cheddar.
The usual breakfast.
Lunch was a spicy Caribbean vegie pattie with chilli tomato sauce.
Some grapes. The last of the quinoa salad.
Grilled some sourdough bread drizzled with olive oil to make bruschetta with red and yellow tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, seasoning. Sometimes the simplest things are the most delicious.
A Daim bar. I thought they were American but they're originally from Sweden.
Wednesday
The usual breakfast.
Lunch was a spicy Caribbean vegie pattie with chilli tomato sauce.
Went to hear Michael Pollan talk at a free lecture at the LSE. (Shane our chair was there too). He is assured, chatty and has good answers to pressing sticky issues. You can catch the session on BBC Analysis on Monday 29 September 20:30 on @BBCr4today #LSEfood.
Had some tasty Turkish after in Covent Garden.
Yes I may have eaten some grapes and a Daim bar when I got home.
Thursday
The usual breakfast.
Well the upside of not working is that when your friend arrives from the states you can have a late lunch with them. We chose E Pellici because it has a stunning art deco interior, the Italian food is home made, the fry ups are huge, it's run by friendly Italians with east London accents and the chips are great.
So my friend brought me some quality American crack. Just remember that a little of what you fancy ..... so birthday cake M&Ms, a French vanilla and caramel Milky Way, a box of chocolates - weirdly called old time candies (winner choc a mini tea cake - marshmallow! Jam! Biscuit!) and savoury treats. All definitely not slow. And the verdict: the M&Ms had a weird alcoholic aftertaste and the Milky Way was too sweet with a fake milk aftertaste. The caramel chocolates were good.
Friday
The usual breakfast.
More coffee. Came home after swimming and made the Ottolenghi with roasted yellow cauliflour and yellow courgettes. Tip: I roast the vegetables now, saves me standing over a fry pan for a long time.
Ate at a sushi bar for dinner. Was disappointed they didn't serve vegie gyozas.
Saturday
The usual breakfast.
A couple more coffees. One of my favourite meals at Broadway market from the French man making traditional gallettes.I invited him to be included in our London Directory of where to eat, drink and shop.
Some of those delicious grapes.
Down the local, some wheat beers, chips, and whiskey. They have a whiskey menu. I love my local.
Back home, whiskey, and more American crack: spicy cheetos. After all, you have to understand the opposition. I really enjoyed the cheetos, properly spicy. Have to have a pause so your lips calm down.
Sunday
The usual breakfast.
Gapes. Late lunch/early dinner. The toasted sandwich with fried halloumi, you know the one.
Some cashews, chocolate. Finished the spicy cheetos, they were so good, Writing about them now makes me want some.
