Living Without Food Waste with Slow Food London Wednesday 25th June

How much is food waste costing you? Where in the food chain does most waste occur, and how can we reduce it?

 

Living Without Food Waste will bring together a community from across the food chain to exchange ideas and inspire each other as to how we can begin to tackle these issues.

 

As someone who cares about food, we’d like to invite you to this very special evening of panel discussion, networking, collaborative cooking and enjoying food.

A Slow Weekend at Petersham Nurseries

Last 16-18th May, a weekend  hosted by Petersham Nurseries provided a foretaste of Slow Food Week.

An intimate screening of Slow Food Story, a moving and often funny documentary portrait of Carlo Petrini, which took us on a journey from the earliest days of the movement to the present day was followed by a Q&A session with the Slow Food London Team - grappling issues from GM crops to planting to reducing flooding in the Somerset Levels.

This was followed by two supper clubs in the magical surroundings of Petersham Nurseries Cafe featured a menu based around British ingredients from Forgotten Foods, the Slow Food "Ark of Taste", complemented by ingredients from their own walled garden and local suppliers.

We set up a stand on both the Saturday and Sunday to answer questions about Slow Food, and to connect food with growing food.

Blessed by fine weather, the Petersham Cellar was able to enjoy a tasting of "Slow Wine" in the sunshine on Saturday, and on Sunday, horticulturalist and chef Claudio Bincoletto led a Wild Food Walk along the riverbank, followed by a tasting of edible plants and flowers, and a simple lunch

Catalan pig cookery and general piggery: 2 dates Saturday or Sunday 1-2 March

Join Catalan culinary expert Rachel McCormack and Anna for a glorious day of pig cookery and general piggery.  We will celebrate the pig by using its various parts for a delicious breakfast, hearty lunch, and sausages to take away, as is done at the annual pig slaughter in villages around the world. 

We will make:

Frit Mallorquin - a breakfast dish using liver

Boiled and roasted pig's face - a crispy snack

Trotters a la Catalana - to enjoy for lunch with rice, and roasted with honey

Catalan black pudding - with a couple of variations

Fuet sausages - a classic Catalan salami

...and if time, some pig's brain paté so as not to waste anything.

Rachel is originally from Scotland but spent most of her twenties living in Barcelona, where she caught the Catalan obsession with food.  She now lives in London where she teaches cooking classes, runs food markets and writes about food.  She is also a regular panelist on BBC Radio 4's The Kitchen Cabinet, for which Anna works as food consultant behind the scenes (having had the idea for the show). 

Rachel has run several very popular Pig Days at other venues for crowds of 20-30 people.  This event will be in Anna's home teaching kitchen and is limited to just 8 guests.  It will be a very hands on class, with plenty of pig for everyone to get their hands into.  Not for the squeamish.

See MooMan with us at Borough Market Thursday 12th December

We are hosting a screening of Hook and Son's the Moo Man movie at Borough Market's late night market. This funny yet touching film follows Slow Food London Approved Raw Milk Producer Hook and Son documenting Steve Hook's devotion to his cows, and the land he farms on. The film is screened free of charge in the new Market Hall.

The movie will be on rotation, so do drop in.
